New glass is the easiest glass to ruin
Construction debris does not wash off. Stucco splatter, drywall compound, paint overspray, concrete dust, silicone smears, and label adhesive all bond to glass and need to be physically removed. A squeegee and soap will move the dirt around them and leave every one of them exactly where it is, which is why a brand new house often has the worst-looking windows on the street.
The complication is that scraping new glass is not automatically safe. A known manufacturing issue called fabricating debris leaves microscopic particles fused to the surface of some tempered glass. Scrape a pane like that and the debris drags, leaving fine permanent scratches, and the person holding the blade gets blamed for a defect that came from the factory. It is a real problem on new construction and the reason a test scrape comes first.

How we do it
Assess and test
Tempered panes are identified and a small area is test-scraped in an inconspicuous corner. If the glass shows signs of fabricating debris, we stop and talk to you before going further.
Soak the glass
Everything gets thoroughly wet before any blade is used. Scraping dry glass is the fastest way to scratch it, regardless of the glass quality.
Remove the debris
Sharp blades, replaced often, worked at a low angle on wet glass. A dull or chipped blade is a scratch waiting to happen, so they are treated as consumable.
Wash and detail
Once the surface is clear, the window is washed normally and the frames, tracks, and sills are cleared of construction dust.

Fabricating Debris Is Real
Some tempered glass leaves the factory with microscopic particles fused into the surface. Scraping it causes permanent scratching that is not the cleaner’s fault and is very difficult to argue after the fact. Testing first protects both of us.
Never Scrape Dry
Glass gets soaked before a blade touches it. Dry scraping drags whatever grit is on the surface across the pane, and construction sites have plenty of grit.
Timing Matters
Post-construction cleaning should happen after the trades are finished and before the owner moves in. Doing it too early means doing it twice.
Labels and Adhesive
Manufacturer stickers that have baked on through a summer are considerably harder to remove than fresh ones. If a build has been sitting, mention it, because it changes the time involved.
