Across the river, up toward the Catskills

Ulster County runs from the Hudson waterfront out toward the mountains, and the glass shows it. Homes on well water pick up mineral spotting, and properties under heavy tree cover collect pollen and grit that a garden hose will not lift.

We quote based on what your property actually needs rather than a per-window average. Gutters and screens can also be handled on the same visit.

Local Conditions

What Ulster County does to your windows

Ulster covers ground from the Hudson waterfront to the eastern slope of the Catskills, and it holds some of the oldest surviving stone houses in the country. Kingston was New York’s first capital. Hurley, Marbletown, and New Paltz still have intact eighteenth-century stone streetscapes. That kind of housing stock asks for a different approach than a modern build does.

Dutch Stone Houses

The stone houses through Hurley, Stone Ridge, Marbletown, and along Huguenot Street in New Paltz have deep-set windows, small divided panes, and lime mortar that does not appreciate pressure or harsh chemicals. Everything gets hand-cleaned, water stays off the stone and the sills, and the muntins get worked individually.

Kingston’s Stockade and Rondout

Two very different districts in one city. The Stockade is colonial stone and brick with small original windows; the Rondout is Victorian waterfront with tall storefront glass and upper-story bays. The uptown and downtown business districts both run heavy foot traffic, and that glass shows it within a couple of weeks.

Studios and Skylights

Woodstock and Saugerties are full of houses built or modified for working artists, which usually means north-facing glass walls, clerestory windows, and skylights. Skylights are the ones nobody can reach and almost nobody cleans, and they are also the ones that make the biggest difference to a room when they finally are.

Orchard and Vineyard Country

Along the river through Marlboro, Highland, and Esopus, spray drift from orchards leaves a fine residue on glass that ordinary washing tends to smear rather than lift. It comes off cleanly if you know it is there. Timing a cleaning after the spray season rather than during it saves doing it twice.

Catskill Weather

The western end of the county around Ellenville and Accord gets more snow and harder freeze-thaw than the river towns do. Ice works at old glazing putty, and storm windows go on and come off on a schedule. Late spring, once the storms are down, is the natural time to reset everything.

Village Storefronts

New Paltz, Rosendale, and Saugerties all have compact walkable business districts where the shop window is doing real work. Restaurants and galleries in particular tend to want a standing schedule, because display glass that looks neglected reads as a closed business.

If you are choosing a time, late spring after the last frost and early fall before the leaves come down are the two that hold up best on this side of the river. Gutters are worth adding to the fall visit anywhere near tree cover.
